Mothers who smoke affect the fertility of their sons?

At Viera Fertility Center, we know that counter intuitively, fertility issues can stem back generations. And new research from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) reveals that women who smoke may diminish their son’s reproductive future.

It turns out that mothers who smoke while they are pregnant or breastfeeding may be damaging the future fertility of their sons. The study is the first comprehensive animal model to show the mechanism by which smoking can affect the fertility of male offspring. Until now, the effects on the fertility of male offspring and the mechanisms involved have been unclear — a problem that has been confounded by the lack of animal studies in which the environment and exposure to toxic chemicals can be carefully controlled.
